ChatGPT monitoring

What does ChatGPT say about your business?

ChatGPT has over 400 million weekly users. When they ask for recommendations in your industry, does it mention you — or only your competitors?

ChatGPT is the new word of mouth

People don't just search Google anymore. They ask ChatGPT "What's the best [your category] for [their needs]?" and act on the answer. If your brand isn't in that response, you've lost a customer before you ever knew they existed.

The challenge: ChatGPT's answers change with every model update, every training data refresh, every system prompt tweak. What it said about you last month might not be what it says today.

And you can't see it. ChatGPT conversations are private. There's no search console, no analytics, no way to know what it recommends — unless you systematically test it.

What ChatGPT monitoring tells you

Are you mentioned at all?

The most basic question. When people ask ChatGPT about your industry, does your brand appear in the response? If not, that's a visibility gap you need to close.

Where do you rank?

Being mentioned is one thing. Being mentioned first is another. Track your position in ChatGPT's recommendations relative to competitors.

What sources does it cite?

ChatGPT with browsing cites sources. See whether your website is being referenced, or whether competitors' content is shaping what ChatGPT says.

How does it change over time?

Model updates shift recommendations. Track whether your visibility improves or degrades with each OpenAI release — before your traffic drops.

How Cited Monitor tracks ChatGPT

1

You write the prompts your customers ask. "Best CRM for small businesses", "Top restaurants in Manchester", whatever matters to your brand.

2

We send them to ChatGPT using your OpenAI API key. You supply your own key. You control the model, the cost, and the rate limits. We never see your key — it's stored encrypted and isolated per team.

3

We parse every brand mention and citation from the response. Entity extraction finds every named brand, product, and organisation. You see share of voice, mention position, and cited URLs.

4

Schedule daily or weekly runs and track changes over time. Get alerts when your share of voice shifts. Correlate changes with model updates or content changes on your site.

ChatGPT is just one piece

Cited Monitor runs the same prompts across 13+ models simultaneously. ChatGPT might recommend you, but what does Claude say? What about Gemini? You need the complete picture.

Common questions

Is this the same as what I see in the ChatGPT app?

It is close, but we should be honest about the gap. Cited Monitor queries the OpenAI API with web search enabled, which is the same underlying model and the same grounding mechanism. The consumer app adds personalisation, memory of your past chats and its own interface formatting, none of which are reachable through any API. For tracking whether your brand is named in your category and how you rank against competitors, the API is a faithful and far more reproducible signal.

Are ChatGPT runs web-grounded?

Yes. We enable OpenAI's web search tool on every run, so answers reflect live results rather than training data alone, and we capture the sources returned. That is what lets the report show which URLs shaped the answer, not just what the answer said.

Which OpenAI models does Cited Monitor run?

GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro. The standard model is the right default for scheduled tracking. Pro is worth using on your handful of most important comparison prompts, where the longer reasoning tends to surface a wider competitor set.

How much does it cost to track ChatGPT?

You bring your own OpenAI key and pay OpenAI directly at their published rates, with no markup from us. For most brands a weekly run across twenty prompts is a small single-figure monthly API bill. The Cited Monitor plan is separate, starts at £29 a month, and there is a free tier.

ChatGPT does not mention my brand. What should I fix first?

Check three things in order. First, that ChatGPT can reach your site at all, since many sites unknowingly block OpenAI's crawlers at the CDN or firewall while their robots.txt says otherwise. Second, whether you have a page that directly answers the question being asked, rather than a homepage that describes your company. Third, which third-party pages are being cited instead, because being named on those is often faster than outranking them.

How quickly do changes show up?

Grounded results can move within days of publishing or fixing a page, because the model is searching live. Anything that depends on the model's trained knowledge moves on a scale of months and only shifts with a new model release. Tracking both is how you tell which kind of change you are actually looking at.
